25th Anniversary Celebration



The Claude C. Ries Southern California Chapter #48 of the American First Day Cover Society will celebrate its 25th Anniversary at SESCAL 2009. Coincidentally, the chapter's 25th Anniversary coincides with the theme of SESCAL 2009, "Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics". The chapter was formed in 1984 and is named after the late Claude C. Ries, who passed away in 1984. Claude was a well-known cachetmaker of FDCs and event covers, and was a decorated WWII veteran who was awarded two Silver Stars and a Purple Heart.

At SESCAL 2009, the Ries Chapter will host a table at which members will sell a special event cover commemorating their 25th Anniversary. The cover was designed by Ries Chapter member, Mario Cruz. Members will also provide information about chapter activities and will encourage visitors to join their very active organization.

On Sunday, Oct. 11, the Ries Chapter will hold its chapter meeting from noon until
4:00 p.m.  Beside conducting some chapter business, a panel of six members will
present "Delightful Experiences at AMERICOVER", a discussion of their participation
at the annual AFDCS Convention this past August in Boxborough, MA.
Toward the end of the meeting, there will be a member-donated cover drawing
and also a second drawing with prizes offered by the USPS.

The meeting will culminate with the serving of a special cake to commemorate the
chapter's 25th celebration. In the evening, chapter members and interested non-members will enjoy a boisterous dinner at the California Pizza Kitchen.

Visitors to SESCAL 2009 are encouraged to participate in the Ries Chapter
25th Anniversary Celebration and Meeting.
